Frequently Asked Questions

Game Information

What is this game about?

Your characters have been brought to the Unfinished Library to help in the effort of finishing its various stories; they are referred to as Editors. During a Story, characters either become Actors or Readers; Actors are characters who are AU’d into the setting of the Story for its duration, while Readers maintain their memories and knowledge of their situation but are just dropped into the Story. In between Stories they can explore and interact with the Unfinished Library and each other.

Who are the mods?

Currently the game is modded by Bookie and Elle; the best way to reach them for any mod concerns is on the mod contact here.

What is the pace of the game?

An event log will go up every two weeks; there will be three or four posts per Story, and then two posts in between each story for recovery and library time. So, roughly a three month cycle per Story.

What are your AC requirements?

Base AC is 10 comments in 1 thread, or 15 comments spread across 2 threads. We also have a Bonus AC option for earning skill points (see more information on skills here), which is either an additional 10 comments in a different thread, or a further 15 comments across 2 threads. AC is monthly.

What kind of characters do you accept?

All kinds- canon, original characters, malleable protags, CR-AUs, canon-AUs, fan-AUs… pretty much anything.

Do you have a limit on how many versions of a character there can be?

Not at the moment. We probably don’t need twenty Warriors of Light but we’re not putting a hard cap on it yet. However, the versions of the character must be different enough to be… well, different characters. We would accept Canon!Neku and AnotherDay!Neku, we would not accept P5!Yusuke and P5Royal!Yusuke. If you’re not sure if what you’re thinking of counts, ask us!

Is there a character limit for players? How many can I app per round?

The base character limit is 2; characters can app an additional character after meeting Bonus AC for both existing characters. You can app one character per round.

When are reserves open? When are apps open?

General applications are open for the month of ‘library’ time in between Stories; reserves are open during the run of a Story. This means applications are open for a month, closed for two months, and then open again, and reserves are open when applications are not.

We will be trialing using invite applications during the Story; to do this, you must have an invitation from an existing player and your character must be placed into the Story as an Actor. The expectation is that whoever invited you will give you the run down and help you find your rhythm even in the middle of plot happenings.

Are powers nerfed?

Generally, no! Characters can maintain all their powers from canon, mostly with the obvious caveats: they can’t escape the library, they can’t severely damage the library, they can’t use their powers on other characters without the consent of other players. Characters with any kind of teleportation ability will find that the library hampers it to the point of it almost being unusable; they can use their ability to get to the stable areas of the library (the main lobby, the dorms, the kitchens) and basically nothing else. In addition, any characters with creation-type abilities might have their powers swapped out for an equivalent Library skill.

Can my characters bring their pets/summons creature (pokemon/persona/etc)?

Characters may bring 1 small pet to the Library with them, if it would have been around them/on their person at the time of their arrival. Other pets may be regained via skill points (which is ICly done by leaving a request at the circulation desk and hoping an assistant answers; more on all of this down in Setting).

Summons may be brought to the Library, however they will without exception only be summonable in a sort of "safe mode;" they are unable to interact with the Library or Editors in any meaningful way. This can also be changed via use of skill points, to regain the summon's "proper" form.

Hey, why are you asking if I’m over 18 to join? Is this a sex game?

This is not a sex game, and there won’t be any Stories that are explicitly sexual. We’re just old and tired and want to play with other adults.

What do my characters arrive with?

The clothes on their back, whatever is conceivably in their pockets/on their person, and a journal provided by the library (more on that under Setting).

Can my character fourth-wall other characters?

Without asking? No. If your character would know another’s canon, either make sure the players are ok with it or just make an expy version of it.

What're the rules for a hiatus?

You can hiatus for up to one month at a time by letting us know here; if you need longer, please contact the mods so we can make sure you're doing ok and provide an IC reason your character is out of commission if needed. There is no strict rule on how often you can take a hiatus, but if the mods see you abusing the system we will talk to you about it and may remove you from the game if the situation doesn't improve.

Can I canon update my character?

You can! For now, please let the mods know that you are doing this here and we will walk you through how it will work in the Library.

Setting

What is the Unfinished Library? What sort of spaces can be found?

The Unfinished Library is a massive, sprawling library where the only things on the shelves are unfinished stories. At this point in time it’s not clear where these stories come from, why they need to be finished, where the library is located, or pretty much anything that would involve information from outside of the library.

The stacks are endless and winding and very easy to get lost in, but also don’t seem to necessarily subscribe to a strict layout. The various sections move around and it can be difficult to find a specific area of the stacks more than once, but if characters think about needing to head back to the lobby/main desk they will find their way back almost immediately. This does not work for any other location.

Anything a library might have in terms of facilities can be found. There is a computer lab (though no internet access), quiet rooms, a children’s area, a maker space, meeting rooms, a community garden… if it is possible a library would have it, this library does. There is also a set of dorm rooms with bunkbeds, enough of them to make sure each character has their own bed, bathing facilities, and some kitchenettes off a consistent path from the main circulation desk. They are all stocked with the bare basics of what characters would need.

Can my character read the books in the Library?

They can! However, this is the Unfinished Library, so all the stories are, in fact, unfinished. This might mean there’s no ending, or a bit in the middle missing, or even some are just the vague outlines of an idea, like you would find in brainstorming. They can make for pretty frustrating reads as a result.

The same is true of other media within the Library, regardless of what it is- this makes books the most tolerable most of the time because unfinished movies may have weird cuts or unfinished sound editing, while video games and such may straight up be missing code that makes it not work. Some do, but it’s a lot of trial and error to figure out what is playable.

Can my character look up books in the Library?

Yes, but not easily. The Library does not have an electronic system and therefore relies on a card catalog. For more information on the catalogue, please see the setting page.

Will they be able to recognize any of the Stories from books in the Library?

No, The Librarian feels like the best way to finish these Stories is organically and makes sure the Stories they present to be Edited are not anywhere the Editors would be able to stumble upon them. There might be similar stories, but nothing exactly the same.

My character is angry/destructive/hates books and wants to destroy some of them. Can they?

Well first of all: rude. Second, they can, but will quickly discover it’s not worth it. Trying to destroy anything within the stacks will work for a moment, but turns out burning a story doesn’t finish it so they will refresh on the shelf almost instantly. The Librarian may ignore the first offense since it’s harmless, but repeated attempts to destroy library property will be met with a fine. What sort of fine, when there’s no money? Let us know if your character tries this out.

The exception to this quick revival is the Recommended Readings (read more here.) As these books are finished and therefore ‘on loan,’ destroying them will actually destroy them, or at least remove them from the Library. This will piss off the Librarian a LOT so definitely let us know if your character tries that!

What about characters of unusual size?

I don’t think they exist. When they are alone, everything will be proportional to them; when they are not, things can get a bit… wonky. The Library seems to adjust things to be the average size of whomever is present- so, if a giant robot is in the room with one human, everything will be halfway between what sizes would be comfortable for them. If there’s a giant robot with ten humans, everything will be slightly bigger than normal for humans but not to the same degree. There might be a way to fix that in the future.

My character needs a specialized diet and/or medications. Can they get that here?

The library provides everything characters need to survive and function as they normally would. This includes blood for vampires, allergy friendly ingredients, medication, you name it. They will be found in the kitchenettes off of the main lobby.

Is there a network?

Yes! Characters will receive what looks a bit like an old-fashioned log book (the kind librarians might have once used to keep track of loans); they can use this to communicate with each other privately. To make a post on the network addressed to the group, the original post has to be put on the bulletin board in the main lobby. Once that’s done, characters can reply to it from their journals. At this time, written text is the base available network option; other methods are available through skills.

What is the Librarian?

They’re a Librarian. Obviously.

No, seriously.

Fine. At this point, no one knows. It’s not even clear that there’s only one Librarian; they only ever appear when a character is alone, so it could be a different Librarian for every character, or one Librarian that can change how it looks, or anything in between. All that’s known at this point is that they are in charge of the Stories, and, in some way or another, related to the Editors arrival here.

What are the Assistants?

The Assistants are the Librarian’s helpers, though unlike the Librarian they do seem to be actual people with more or less stable appearances. They do a lot of the background busywork of keeping the Library running and helping out where needed in Stories. They’re not allowed to interact much with the Editors at the present moment, but that could change.

What happens if a character dies in the Library?

First of all, the Librarian is going to be very upset. This is a terrible mess and they’re not happy, and anyone who is responsible for a death in the Library is going to face severe consequences. If you have a character kill another, please contact the mods for said consequences. Secondly, in a few days your character will just wake up in the stacks like they did on their initial arrival, and, just like their initial arrival, their memory of the moments before that will be vague. It is up to you if they recover the memories with perfect clarity, they forget dying, they remember their murdered but not much else, or anything in between!

My application came back and it said my character is an Archivist or Revisionist. What does that mean?

Those are classifications the Librarian thinks your characters fall into. What do they mean? What are they for? Good questions all. Guess we’ll find out later!

Story Information

So, how do these Stories work?

At the start of any particular Story, characters will be drawn to a section of the stacks; even if they try to fight it they will find themselves walking there. The Story manuscript will be laid out on a side table and touching it will bring them into the Story. Characters can either voluntarily touch the Story to enter it, or the Librarian will throw them in. Regardless of how long it takes them to touch the Story, everyone will arrive at the same point in time.

Once in the Story, characters will be divided into two categories: Actors and Readers. Readers remember themselves and the Library, and do not know anything of the Story they’re dropped into. Actors on the other hand find themselves believing that they have always been a part of the Story, with memories and abilities to match. Logs will go up once every 2 weeks progressing the Story, which will respond to character actions and choices.

Can you explain the difference between a Reader and an Actor?

Readers are your characters as their normal selves- they remember their canon, their time in the Library, and have their normal abilities. They are dropped into the Story as an outsider and are not AU'd into the setting.

Actors are AU'd into the Story, as if it was the Story they have always belonged in. They will not remember their canon or their time in the Library (though Ironic Parallels are encouraged for drama), nor will they have any of their normal abilities. Instead they will have a background that fits their role in the Story and the associated abilities to go with it.

There are skills that can adjust how much characters know/are aware of it, but the baseline is: Readers remember the Library and aren't AU'd, Actors don't remember the Library and are AU'd.

Can my character leave a Story once they're in it?

At the moment, no, they would need the assistance of an Assistant or the Librarian to leave the Story (which is what happens at the Story's end). This may change with future exploration and understanding of the Library.

What are Star Actors?

Star Actors are, essentially, major characters of the Story. They are roles that come with specific mod-generated info, and usually something impacting them is what will drive the Story to its conclusion. Prior to each Story, the mods will list a description of the roles for Star Actors in this story and take volunteers; if multiple people volunteer, priority will be given to those who haven’t had a Star Actor role recently, and then by RNG.

Do I have to do anything special if my character is a Star Actor?

You’ll be given updates on your characters backstory and motivations for each event post, so you have guidance on how their ‘character’ should be played. Mostly, if you are a Star Actor, you’re expected to be active enough to keep up with it for the duration of the Story. We do want Star Actors to do more than the bare minimum for activity to facilitate the plot.

Can my characters bring things back from Stories?

As of right now, no. But that might change, depending on what characters do…

What are the Recommended Readings?

The Recommended Readings are the in character ‘hints’ as to what the next Story will be like. Sometimes it’s genre, sometimes it’s vibe, sometimes it’s more or less the same idea with the serial numbers filed off. These are the only completed stories in the Library, and they’re only available for the brief period they’re recommended. They are also not always books!

My character would read the Recommended Reading but I don’t want to/don’t have time/etc. What should I do?

There are two main options for this: either you can read a wiki and use enough of that to get the gist, or your character just… can’t get their hands on a copy. Unlike the normally available material in the library, the Recommended Readings are more restricted, so your character could just be put on the waitlist and by the time they’re up, whoops, it’s out of circulation!

So the Recommended Readings are real, completed stories… could my character’s canon be one of them?

They could! Boy, that’s weird, right? Wonder what that means…

I don’t want my character’s canon to be used for a Recommended Reading.

There is an opt-out for this in the application; if the Recommended Reading was from before your time in the game, characters can just assume they read a slightly wonky version that doesn’t exactly line up with your character’s canon. If you didn’t opt out on your application but would like to at a later point, just let the mods know.

Can we suggest Stories?

Yes! Please drop us a comment here with your idea, and whether or not it’s something you would like to run!

Will we visit our characters’ stories?

The mods will never write a Story that is from a pre-existing canon. However, we are open to discussion on a player-lead Story of some canons. Contact us to discuss.

Skills Information

Wait, skills?

Correct! This is a Library, after all; learning new skills is a key part of the experience. Characters are able to learn skills from reading materials in the Library, or from practical experience during a Story. For more information on what skills are available and how to acquire them, see the skills page.

I think my character would be able to pick up a specific skill from a Story, but you didn’t specify it was one they could take. Can they take it anyway?

Sure! We want the process of gaining skills to be fun and support whatever sort of arc/character build you’re going for. Just drop us a message on the skill page with a brief description detailing what your skill will allow your character to do; we’ll make sure it’s not too overpowered and then you’re good to go!

Does my character have to pick up skills?

Nope, this is an entirely optional part of the game. A part we hope is fun, but if you don’t want to engage with it you do not have to.

Can my characters learn skills from other character’s worlds?

They can, provided that it is something that can be taught and not something inherent to their world. (For example, you can’t teach someone to be a FFVII!SOLIDER; there’s no mako in the Library.) These would need to be treated as taught skills; see the skill page for more information on those.

Questions about CRAUs! If a character has gained powers from their CRAU, would they be able to carry that power over with them into this game? Or would it strictly be canon powers only?

A question about powers. Say a character's abilities stem from a possession of which the character is aware and with whom they can converse. They share the same body, and and work in tandem to accomplish goals that a normal human body wouldn't be capable of. It's also canon that people who can converse with spirits can see and speak with this other entity. Would that entity come with them?

A further question about book destruction for uh. reasons. (The reasons are The Unicorn likes to eat paper. That's uh. That's it. That's the reasons. When people mail him letters, he saves them as snacks for later, and while he's not so uncouth as to just go devouring other people's property willy-nilly, who is to say that he might not, you know, get a little peckish at some point? And does anyone really *need* that table of contents? Or what about that extra blank page at the end included so that the binding would come out evenly?)

What if a character eats (or tries to eat) the pages (of the books that can't be destroyed; I'm sure the books that can be destroyed can also be eaten, if it comes to it)?

Hey mods! I have a question about AUs!

You said that they have to be different enough to be another character. Different from canon or from other people's version (AU) of him (if there was one)? I'm wondering if an aged up version of a different path in life (Makoto stays in the Future Foundation and becomes a leader on it (for reasons...) would work. Or is that too similar personality wise to canon (if he doesn't have that much of a change in personality from canon other more calm and confident)?

Are Pokemon considered pets or summons? And if they're pets, do they have to be small, or can they come in their Pokeball?

Also, this character is a CRAU who aged up to 16 in her original game, but I also have an AU of her from after the CRAU game ends, would it be okay to pull her from that canonpoint?

Since they're got a video for 'recommended reading'...is there any kind of media room in the locations? Or something that would have a tv, projector, etc. Or would the only option to watch video be to load it up on one of the computers in the computer lab?)

(Also, what format are things like movies in? Are we talking DVD, VHS...old school film projection?)

EDITING TO ADD: Also, do the computers in the computer room have anything like a wifi connection? (Basically: could Muderbot, who is basically a computer itself and comes with in-built access to the Feed / Wifi, connect to them that way?)

Realising I should ask about what Murderbot can see with its various vision sensors around the library / basically, it can swap between a tangle of different vision filters including infrared, energy reading scanning, heat signatures, etc. Would those filters pick up anything notable?

Places it would be looking at specifically include the stacks, circulation desk/lobby, and the rotating room, particularly the community garden (it would be trying to determine if the sky is a simulation)

1. Does the 'network' come with any kind of identifiers? Or will people need to identify themselves for others to know who is writing?

Two questions--and forgive me if the first is already answered somewhere.

1. If a character's newly injured on being pulled into the Library, will they keep the injury or have it healed?

2. If a character is under active mind-control -- being forced to act against their own will -- by another individual or entity in their setting, would that break on being pulled into the Library? I guess this could also apply to spells that apply some kind of coercion to characters, or alter their personalities, or whatever.

I know that for Stories, icon mule accounts are acceptable, but if you're apping a canon AU (especially if you're not doing paid accounts for extra icon space/etc) would a player be allowed to have more than one account, to better keep things differentiated/straight as they were playing? For example if they're being apped in at a pre-canon point, later being canon updated to a mid-canon point, and still later being updated to a post-canon au point, all with a distinct look/distinct differences in info, would it be acceptable to have a journal dedicated to each stage, assuming all are clearly 'claimed' for that character in the taken listing? (And assuming it's not 400x of them, naturally!)

Me with a question!
So, a character is an Actor in the Story. At the Story's end, how much of their Actor role do they remember? What memories would they have of the story? (How badly will Sanguinius want to die of embarrassment when this is over is the real question).
